Your First Hot Yoga Class: What to Expect

October 30, 2026

Thinking about trying hot yoga but not sure what you're walking into? Here's what a first class at Urban Ōm looks like, from what to pack to the final rest, so you can show up relaxed and ready.

Pick your first class

Our studio specializes in heated power yoga, and Hot Power Flow runs every day of the week in our infrared-heated room, in 60- and 75-minute classes. If you're brand new to yoga, you can also start with Beginner Yoga, a non-heated 60-minute class on Saturdays at 11 AM. In every class, teachers offer options for different experience levels.

Start with the intro offer

New students can try 21 days of classes for $30 with code URBANOM. It takes 21 days to create a new habit. How much can you change in 21 days? Start your 21 days, then reserve your spot on the class schedule.

What to bring

  • A yoga mat
  • A full-length mat towel and a hand towel
  • Water

No mat or towel yet? Both are available to rent at the studio for $5.

What to wear

Wear comfortable, breathable clothing. Form-fitting clothes help your teacher see your alignment. Leggings, shorts, tank tops, t-shirts and sports bras are all welcome, and men may prefer to go shirtless. Please skip strong fragrances and colognes, since you'll be sharing the room with others.

Hydrate before you arrive

Drink water before, during and after your practice. In a heated class your body needs plenty of water to sweat and release heat, and we recommend replenishing with electrolytes. If you feel dizzy or nauseous during class, it may be a sign you're not hydrated enough, so rest and sip some water.

When to arrive

Plan to get to the studio 10 to 15 minutes early so you can check in, settle in and set up your mat. Doors open 25 minutes before class. To avoid disruption, doors lock 3 minutes after class starts and late arrivals can't be admitted, so give yourself a little extra time on your first visit.

During class

Think of class as a mini escape. Phones stay in the lobby, and the studio is quiet before class, so save conversations for the lobby. Listen to your body: if something doesn't feel right, don't do it. Rest whenever you need in child's pose or lying on your back. Try to stay in the room for the whole class unless there's a real emergency, because your teacher can only help you when they can see you.

You don't need to be "in shape"

You don't need to be flexible, an athlete or in shape to do yoga. That's what you come to yoga to become. You do need an open mind, respect for the people around you, and to be ready to sweat.

If you're pregnant, practicing with a child under 13, or in your senior years, check with your health care provider before practicing in the heat.
